Summary: Battle begins.

"Sir?" Razor pointed at the horizon, where a black mass suddenly appeared. The Ev. Zero watched as the mass divided up into two, the smaller group moving towards them, the larger, continuing towards the palace, towards Cain's position.

He took up his communicator. "Ambrose, how much longer?"

Ambrose, was clearly at the end of his tether, looking worse than he did when DG had found him hanging from the Eastern Guild's cage. His people were working feverishly, not looking much better. "Just another couple of minutes."

"Ok..." Then the shelling began.

"Sir, there appear to be some kind of shielding deflecting our fire," Hawk's lieutenant, Danner reported.

"Impossible!" The Sorceress (Mark II) near spluttered. "My magic is supposed to defeat their defences!"

Hawk smiled at her. She never fully realised that Zero was more than just a heavy lifter. "I've found it wise never to underestimate Zero's technical skill or resourcefulness." He looked over at Danner. "Bring us around for another pass."

Zero was worried. The shields were holding and they inflicted a few casualties of their own, using their own cannons, but he knew that the shields wouldn't last forever and Ambrose and his people were still very exposed.

"Dammit, Eddie, keep it still," Ambrose snarled at him.

Eddie gave him an incredulous look. The impact of the shields were buffeting around them and he'd had to swerve several times to avoid being hit. "I have to take evasive manoeuvres, sir."

"We could destabilise the mines!"

"We could also be blown up, sir."

Another boom eccentuated his point, except this one was far away. Looking out, Ambrose saw the tank that was harassing them blow up. Zero's voice arrived on the communicator. "Go on with your work, Ambrose, I've got ya covered."

"Who says there's never a Longcoat when you need one?"

"Focus your fire," Hawk ordered, undetered, rather, he was relishing the unexpectedly powerful resistance. "There," he pointed. "We have to penetrate their shields. Danner relayed the orders immediately.

"Ambrose to Cain."

"Cain."

"We've set the last mine."

"Beautiful, Sweetheart. Activate them and return to base."

"Sir! The Minefield!"

"I have eyes, Danner!"

"This isn't quite how I planned," Sorceress remarked.

Hawk dismissed her with a wave of his hand. They hadn't accomplished nothing - General Zero was on the run and each second that passed meant more ground gained. In fact, the minefield was turning out to be Zero's only victory. "Once we reach Zero's abandoned outpost, we'll be able to dismantle the minefield without interference."

The Sorceress arched an eyebrow at this. "Let's both hope your confidence is justified."

Hawk suppressed to urge to slap her. "Danner, signal the reserves to prepare for a final assault."

"Sir! Zero reports more Ev reinforcements!"

Cain weighed his options even though he knew from the start what they would have to do. Give up more territory. "We've done all we can here. We're evacuating the station."

Even though it was 'all part of the plan', several people were devastated by this news. Wyatt was a little gutted himself.
